ABYSS
Alissa Bilodeau
ARTWORK DESCRIPTION
ABYSS
Alissa Bilodeau plunges us into the abyssal depths of a phantasmagorical cavern of biomorphic creatures, flourishing plant life and mineral outgrowths. The immersive environment transports spectators to a sublime, marvellous elsewhere.
The ABYSS lures us in like a carnivorous plant, enchanting us with its whimsical appearance only to draw us into a sinister trap. While it is joyfully kitschy, bright and resplendent with sequins, furs and rhinestones, the work can also be read as a comment on the invasion of the earth by synthetic materials which are altering our natural environments forever.
